Update from Cart 1.8.4 to 1.9 fails

Running CMSMS 1.11.5, & Cart 1.8.4
When updating to Cart 1.9 the update returns a blanc screen in the admin panel.
Tried some other routes to this update as there are various CG modules who are in for an update, such as CGECommercebase needed update from 1.3.11 to 1.4.2. Whatever combination of updates, as soon as Cart is updated, the admin panel is a blanc (empty screen). After each succesful module update the cache is cleared on CMSMS as wel as the one in the local browser.
When I update to 1.11.6 first the problem remains.

[update: tried the manual update via ftp'ing cart 1.9 folder directly into /modules. result is the same. deinstall Cart 1.8.4 also wrecks the admin interface! Now running CMSMS 1.11.6 with al the modules updates except Cart.
updated another site with a similar configuration without any problems to cart 1.9.

not sure if this is related to an SQL error in one of the pages using the product database:

When retrieving all related Product pages I encounter for on set of product pages an SQL error:
