Problem using cms_selflink in template

Hi
I have a problem using the cms_selflink tag in a template
I want to use {cms_selflink dir="up"}
If i put it into a template then it is impossible to apply and if i submit the template it doesn't update at all and exists the admin and gives me a blank screen with this url admin/edittemplate.php?_sx_=01f6e4a3.
If i put {cms_selflink dir="up"} in a page then it works fine
Does anyone have an idea what the problem can be?
