Thumbnail Issues

Ok. On some installs of CmsMS I am getting some awkward errors in Image Manager, It seems that image thumbnails do not create, instead they appear in image manage as alt text in firefox, or as a broken image in internet explorer.
I have compared almost every setting in CMS from an install which has ThumbNails working to an install which doesnt and everything is identical, I cant work out whats going on here can anyone suggest anything? I have a client that needs his site up by tommorrow and for the past few weeks this issue has had me tearing my hair out!

firstly, thank you for the support!
I have no idea how, but it seems to have fixed itself?! on the version that was never working! I wish I knew how this fixed itself!

Well someone else on same host as you are might have told administrators that they lack GD and administrators has installed it.

I have the exact same problem. What version cmsms are you using ?
Cause it drives me nuts also.
I can't remember having changed anything.
Wait a minute !
I have been trying some things.
I had an image of 1600x1200 no thumbnail was created. I uploaded the same picture in 640x480 and now image manager DOES create a thumbnail !
Is there a filesize limit

There is an upload file size set in config.php?

But what does it do ?
Fair enough when I can't use filemanager to upload.
But what if I upload the file by ftp.
Is this variable ($config['max_upload_size'] = 2000000) used for generating thumbnails

I am running into this same problem again.
Nobody seems to know ?
What is the maximum image size for thumbnail creation ?
Thumbnails of small image ARE created thumbnails of big images are NOT created ?

ops i've just opened a new discussion an the same issue

i've the same problem . . . sometimes thumb is right chmoded and sometimes not ........
i've GD - CMS Made Simple 1.0.2 + Album 0.7.4 on Linux Server . Apache/1.3.37 php 4.4.3

site admin -> global settings -> File Creation Mask (umask)
i've put in the valueof 000 which make yourfiles 666 chmoded
