Edited October 29, 2012 2140 hours to add file for "Checking Permissions and PHP Settings":

Printout of Permissions and Settings Log

Thank you for letting me join the group. I am an old FrontPage user trying to make the switch to CMS Made Simple. It is on the site of http://register.ca and I see that is PHP 5.3, MySQL5 and Linux System. That site also hosts my other sites with phpBB3 and WIKI if that is important (as to what it can host).

I downloaded and installed the 1.11.2.1 and installed it on my site (http://laughton.ca) via FTP (FlieZilla 3.5.3) and in Binary Mode. Permissions were set to 777. There are some warning points from the installation and I can add those to the question to see if those are causing a problem (now attached at top of post). I am a new user of CMS so I am not that literate on these items but I work hard to learn and will master it eventually.

I am stuck now because the THEME MANAGER module does not showup on my drop-down tab for the "Layout" - I only get "Templates" and "Stylesheets". It took me some time to find more about adding the "Theme Manager Module" and then when I went to upload it I saw it was there already. There are other modules as well that perhaps do not show.

I get a Popup that says "Make sure to set Manage Themes Permissions to Use this module". I am stuck at this point and I do not know if and what has to be corrected. I searched the web and this site (with internal and Google search) and I could not find information. I have read through the manual. Any suggestions where a newbie goes to from here?

I see your site is now "proudly powered by WordPress" - does that mean you've given up with CMSMS? :(

It looks like you have taken your permissions log offline too.

If you are logged in as the main admin you should have access to the themes (you can check by going to Users & Groups -> Group Permissions and checking the permissions next to Manage Themes).

Happy to try and help further if I can.

Paul:

Thanks for responding. I had been checking every day to see if anyone could lend me a hand, then after a while it became every other day - and now just weekly. I appreciate that everyone is busy and can not lend a hand to every poor lost soul, but I thought I would give it a try.

I believe that CMS Made Simple is the best system to go forward with and I do want to get it to work, but I had to have some system up-and-running before December 1, 2012 as that is when my other main system goes down with FrontPage on the Allstream servers. As I have a number of blogs for others on Wordpress I knew more about their system and as such I also knew I could "make it work" like a web site, but we all know it is not a true web building package.

Although I am no web wizard (I started my first sites in 1990 with line by line HTML programming) I do try to keep up to date. I look after a few sites as a volunteer for our local Historical Society and Legion, so I want to take all of them to the next level. Learning to do that with my own site at http://laughton.ca seemed to be the best way. If I mess it up, nobody is hurt.

When I uploaded the WordPress package I had to remove the CMS package, but the databases and the rest of the files are still on my system. I suspect I can reload these to a separate directory and continue on with my learning lesson. Do you know if there would be a problem if I had both the WordPress and the CMS systems on the same server at the same time? I have had phpBB2 and phpBB3 both running at the same time without any issues, as long as they have separate databases and are in separate directories.

The site says "Proudly powered by WordPress" as that is in their package and it says we agree not to remove that phrase. I think there is something similar for CMS? If people develop these packages for free use I think we owe it to them to abide by the rules.

If it is possible, I will reload my CMS site to a separate directory and continue on with the learning process now that I have someone who wants to help. Do you think that is a good idea?

Thanks for the offer to help!!

Richard

Paul:

I read a bit and it says I can have more than one system operational so I FileZilla'd the files back to here:

http://laughton.ca/cmsms/index.php

It looks like I might have to go back through the installation process again - but when I check in deeper I can go back to my home page when I sign in and I can see the "Users & Groups" and "Group Permissions" you mentioned. The "Manage Themes" was checked for Admin but not the other two, so I checked all of them in case it does not think I am the Admin? I get the same message when I try to access the Theme Module: (Site Admin / Admin Log)

70.27.124.44 rlaughton ERROR ERROR DETECTED: Call to undefined method ThemeManager::_toCache() at /mnt/stor12-wc2-dfw1/588082/746272/www.laughton.ca/web/content/cmsms/lib/c ... inc.php:79

It has been a few weeks since I was back in CMSMS so I am not right up to speed. Perhaps I should start back at the beginning and reload everything from scratch? Looking for advice.

My posts go to a moderator first so I could not EDIT the previous post - or add to it - so I had to do this as another post.

Well at the moment it looks like you have installed 1.11.2.1 successfully (looks OK to me, anyway).

Back end - you will be logged in as the main admin, which is the Admin column you refer to (which you can't update - that's normal and to prevent you locking yourself out of being able to do some actions). At a later date you can create additional users with less power.

Yes I would be tempted to start from scratch - doesn't look like any original content will be lost and it's all good practice.

Did you do the original install with FTP? If so there might be a missing file which is causing your error. Try to install the files by uploading the .gz and unzipping in your control panel. It's SO much quicker and easier if you can, and no danger of missed files.

When you are going through a problem like this new posts are always better than editing old ones, IMHO. Then it's clear in what order things happened.

Let us know what happens next

Thanks again Paul! This time I went back and set my notifications properly on this site so I will get a nudge the next time you respond. I was busy this weekend setting up the phpBB3 on the site (all of which worked well so no issues at the server: http://laughton.ca/forums/lts).

My service provider uses http://websitesettings.com for general settings and that takes me to "phpMyAdmin", which I assume is my control panel (as compared to "Cpanel"). As such, I can not upload a zip file and unzip it on the server. I checked to see if I could do it with FileZilla and the answer to that was "no!"

About all I can do is to start from scratch again and follow the same route but I assume I would end up back with the same results. When I do this type of project I print out each page, put it in a binder and add my notes - so I can go back and check. I do not see that there were any problems with the initial install.

I am more than willing to go back and start fresh again. Is there anything special I should do or watch out for in the 2nd install? I will save copies so I can send a PDF with all the information this time. I have a copy of the "Permissions and PHP Settings" from the 1st install but if I am going to do the 2nd this would not be of much value to you now?

In Step 3 of the process "Test File Creation Mask" it shows 022 in the 1st install. I read on-line that might need to be changed? Any ideas?

In Step 5 it asks about the Database Permissions. I assume that means the permissions have to all be set to 777 - correct?

I may have confused Step 3 and Step 5 and set the 022 to 777 at some point. I have a page printed where 022 did not pass the test but 777 passed. That step is a good example of a novice doing something that he has no knowledge about!

With the 1st install everything appeared to work fine and the site was set up with the basic theme. It all fell apart when I went to get a "full theme" to use for a web site.

I appreciate you taking the time to lend a hand. I run a number of forums and web sites so I try to do the same. "Pay It Forward" as they say!

To upload a .zip or .gz to your hosting you need access to cpanel or similar - your host should give you this access. It's here that you can also set up email addresses, look at statistics for the domain etc. There is an option called file manager which enables you to upload files and expand (uncompress) them.

phpMyAdmin may be helpful later for downloading database backups.

Basic idea is: Upload .gz file, expand .gz file, create a MySQL database and user then run example.com/install and follow the prompts - many of which are simply a case of clicking the "next" button.

From memory, 022 sounds fine to me. Database permissions is where you enter your database user info.

The CMSMS Docs is getting much better these days (woo!) so give it a try. Start here and follow from the via cPanel section on this page:
