Adding a Forum Module

I have a site I set up some time ago for a client which runs 1.9.3 the client would now like to add a forum to their site. Firstly how big a job is it to upgrade to 1.11 and is it likely to problematic? Secondly is there a forum module which works with the latest version and if not would an older one work with 1.9.3. I notice forum made simple is listed as stale?

this is a fork of Forum Made Simple, but this one is 1.11 compatible.

Thanks for your help, I will give the first option a go if I can successfully upgrade from 1.9.4, fingers crossed!
