CompanyDirectory - Searching Custom Fields

I'm on CMSMS 1.10.3, and Company Directory 1.13.1.
I'm building a site where the customer wants to list charitable organisations (basically companies), a bit of info about them, and then which areas they cover (regions of the local area), plus what type of organisation they are.
So I've used Company Directory. The 'type of organisation' is Category, and the list of areas they cover are checkboxes in field definitions, ticked if yes and unticked if no.
They want both the type (category) and this list of locations to be searchable, but I can't figure out how to do it. I know there are text boxes that let you search in the address or the post code, but these organisations don't have a single address, they might cover 10 different areas, so I need to be able to select, for example, 'Community and Fundraising Organisations', and 'Bacup/Weir', and list those with that category, and that location ticked.
I'm sure I read somewhere, once, a few lines about what type of field definition was searchable but I can't find it anywhere now.
Is there a way to do it, or is there a better way to do this entirely?
