I have tried using Goran Ilics gmaps plugin. I did some minor changes to the code to make it accept KML files as input but unfortunately I managed to do something wrong.

The result is that I have a "stuck" gmaps tag preventing me from uploading new plugins.

I have tried to figure out how to get rid of this problem but to no avail. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Turn error reporting on and you will see somewhere a error in your plugin code.
But if i remember right there is already a plugin that handles kml.

The problem is that even though I have removed the file from the plugins-folder on the FTP-server. The tag still appears in the overview in the admin panel.

You may have to go to the DB and remove it from the plugin list...

This is so embarrasing

The problem was a file that was named wrongly with erroneous content causing the error.
