How can I download and backup files from CMS?

I have just been handed the CMS login and duties of a community organisation and have been asked to download and backup the CMS files so that some of them can be altered using other programs (and by other people) in the future.
Is this possible? I don't have much experience with CMS other than altering pages and uploading content. Any assistance is most welcome.

Just download all the files in the webroot and backup your SQL database.
Or look if your webhosting has an adminpanel, like DirectAdmin or Plex. They have automatic backuptools.

But I can't see how to download from the CMS screen. Filemanager only allows me to upload and we can't access the ftp.

you can download files using the Control Panel of your hostingprovider, or you can use e.g. Filezilla,
http://filezilla-project.org/. So one way or another, the guy who started this website must give you all necessary information to access FTP or the Control Panel of your provider.

OK thanks. Unfortunately being a community centre committee, no one know how to contact him anymore

I will start building a new site I guess.
Thanks for the replies!

contact your hostingprovider, they have all the necessary information.
