Self Registration - Email verification AND paid packages

I would like to know if anyone else has managed to achieve the following...
I'm using the Self Registration module to allow users to sign up for a membership to my site and have 2 packages available to users, one which costs £14.99 a month and another which is free (£0.00).
For those users who have signed up for a free membership, I need an email confirmation to be sent out to them to verify their email address. This works fine when I check the "Require the user to confirm registration via email" option in the SelfReg preferences tab.
The only problem is I only want this to work for free (zero value) packages and not paid packages. Currently with the option above turned on, anyone who signs up for the paid membership receives a verification email which allows them to skip the cart/checkout stage altogether.
What I need is to be able to suppress email verification for packages which have a value attached to them. Does anyone know how I might go about doing this?
