[SOLVED] PayPal Payment Gateway PDT & IPN email problems

I'm using CMSMS PayPal Gateway and have setup the test seller account in PayPal's Sandbox to use Payment Data Transfer and switched on auto return with the return URL to my checkout page. I have copied the Identity Token into the CMSMS PayPal Gateway preferences and entered the test seller's email address as the business email.
This works OK and following a sale I get redirected back to the site and the admin email accout gets a confirmation email (from CMSMS and PayPal). However, the buyer does not an email from CMSMS (only from PayPal).
I've checked everything except the web logs, I'll check the logs now. This used to work fine.
The other problem is if I switch on IPN then I get multiple email to admin and still none to the buyer. Looking at the IPN history in the Sandbox test seller account all the IPN messages retry for a while and then fail. I guess an email is generated each time it retries to resend. If I could crack this then maybe to buyers email will be sent.
What could be preventing the IPN message from being accepted? Anyone?
