news module URL problem

Hi

I am using the news module and everything works fine.
The issue i have is that if i have an article link like below then all is good

http://www.sitename.com/news/4/28/article

but if for example someone puts in
http://www.sitename.com/news/4/28/

then the page still comes up and if the link like below is input
http://www.sitename.com/news/4/

then the article is displayed at the bottom of the home page(not the detailpage) which is very messy. Why is it that this article can be accessed so many ways and which can enable the look of the site to be messed up
How can i stop this happening?

Also one more thing is if i use a designate a url for an article like
http://www.sitename.com/news/myarticle

then http://www.sitename.com/news/4/28/article is still available

so i have then 2 links to the same article. Is there a way to stop this. I think that this can be a problem for seo but i know i can make just one of these canonical.

Anyone wiser on these subjects?

I believe the answer to the first part of your question is that the /4/28 parts are required to know which module and template to display the article in, which is why removing one of these will corrupt the display.

I'm pretty sure the 'article' on the end (or whatever you decide to call it) is purely there for SEO/readability reasons, which is why it doesn't matter if you remove it.

I'm not sure about the second part of your question (canonical URLs) but someone around here will no doubt be able to answer that.
