Smarty error: unable to read resource: "db:xx

hi
i've just upgraded from v0.10.1 to 0.13 and i get the following error when trying to access my web site:
string(46) "Smarty error: unable to read resource: "db:15""
the number after db: changes depending on the page i set as default.
i can log into the admin part and edit the pages there, i cannot preview them from there - although trying this gives a slightly different error:
string(48) "Smarty error: unable to read resource: "db:test""
i'm sorry i dont know many server details. i think its linux, php4 and i'm not sure of the mysql version
