I love CMS Made Simple but I've recently been asked to start implementing a few SEO methods with a CMSMS 1.8 site.

I noticed that CMSMS 1.9 allows custom URLs for the News Articles which made me upgrade the old 1.8 to the lastest version today. And everything seemed fine...

All my Pretty URLs work - and now the News Article Pretty URLs do too. Fantastic.

One big problem though. It appears that the News Articles have lost the ability to use the correct Page template. They work correctly if the URL isn't specified; if it is specified then they seem to insert themselves into the first Template listed in my Templates list - and strangely, if a URL is specified, they will use the first Page Template in the Template list even if that template is disabled.

I can provide more detail but I thought I would first ask if this is a known issue or bug. I've searched for similar posts but no one appears to be experiencing this problem - but then, perhaps most people have only a single Template across their site and wouldn't encounter this problem anyway.

Has anyone successfully got News Articles with specific URLs working with specific Page Templates?

I'm still experiencing the above problem but I have realised that the News Items with a custom URL are not selecting just any old Page Template...

...they are using the Template associated with the Page set as the default - as set in the Pages list.

Phew. Finally realised what to do to solve the problem above.

I was just glancing through the 1.9 changes and noticed that it said...

"News Module allows customizing the URLs
The News module has also been modified to allow customizing the URLs to the detail view on news articles. i.e: You can choose exactly what the URL will be to each news article. There is a preference as to which content page to use to display the detail view, and it will use the 'default' detail template. I am sure that this functionality will also appear in other third party modules like blog and e-commerce modules soon."

So, I was simply not setting the content page I wanted to use as the template.

If you need it, you'll find it at the bottom of the "News | Options" tab, i.e. in the drop-down menu of "Detail View Settings".
