php and mysql versions and mysql in the setup

Hi
My hosting company provides php v5.2.17 but I can switch to v5.3.6.
Both work fine, I'm alway keen to use the latest verison but is there any technical or performance differences in terms of cmsms?
Also in the install process you can select 'MySQL 4.1+' or 'MySQL (compatibility)'. My host has MySQL v5.1.56.
Again, both appear to work fine but is there any technical or performance differences in terms of cmsms?
Please let me know. (I am installing the latest cmsms 1.9.4.1)
