PNG images in product thumbnails

Hi there,
Just wondering whether it's possible to upload PNG images into products, and have the transparency displayed? At the moment the transparent area is actually black.
Not sure a site fix is needed as I already have png images for menu items, and they work perfectly. It's just products.
