Blank screens can happen when a fatal error occurs. Since this is happening at install time, a guess might be that you're running out of PHP memory. You might try increasing PHP's memory_limit to see if that helps.

Subdomains work for me. In fact, I tend to use subdomain installs for development and testing.

You might also consider verifying your installation using the standalone cmschecksum.php page, in the install directory. E.g.: http://dradio.ehrenwerks.com/install/cmschecksum.php

You may also want to check that your server hasn't added an htaccess filoe in the root to stop this from working...
