Not sure about the forum anymore but CalGuy has improved on the old Blogs Made Simple module:

The old Forum Made Simple was a spam magnet. We had it on our civic club web site for awhile but the spam was way out of control. We opted to run Simple Machines Forum side by side with the rest of the site, and eventually the group abandoned the forum altogether.
If you search the module repository for "forum" you'll find a handful of modules, most of which seem to have died on the vine and are abandoned by their developers. The only ones still remotely active (with a live download link) are:

Forum Made Simple. I see it's been revised in 2010 so you might want to give it another chance; we hadn't used it since 2008 or so.

So it looks like the pickings are pretty slim for a forum.
