Upgrade from 1.2.3 to newest

Hello.
I have a rather big site running, and silly me havent got the CMSMS updated for ages, (1.2.3 is pretty old). But now i see my NEWS module doesn't support dates later than 31/12/2010. So any new posts wont be visible.
Are there are some special things I should be aware of or is it just a project doomed to go wrong?
Another option is to edit the news module so it can show 2011, is that possible? The site is going under a heavy maintenance soon, so i wont use a lot of time on it if there is an easy way, just to get the news module to work.
