error while using jquery

hi,
i am using a jquery for banner rotator. when i am putting the script on head section of the template.
I am getting below error msg.
string(157) "Smarty error: [in tpl_head:28 line 14]: syntax error: unrecognized tag: $("#featured > ul").tabs({fx:{opacity: "toggle" (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 446)" string(111) "Smarty error: [in tpl_head:28 line 14]: syntax error: unrecognized tag '' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 590)"
Please help me on this.
