Why does the _blank not work?

I'm adding some external links to a cms made simple site and even if I choose the target to be _blank, which should make the link open in a new window, it doesn't.
I'm obviously missing something.....
The site is
http://ethicstrading.com and I'm running cmsms v1.7

Please give more information, otherwise helping you is going to be impossible.
Where are you adding these external links? in a normal page? in the WYSIWYG editor (tinymce)?
Can you give an example of a non-working link?

A non working link - the links work, they just open in the same window. On
http://ethicstrading.com/ the menu item "Sarah Barnard" has several sub pages - the ones labelled Website and blog point to external pages, and I want them to open in a new window, and they don't, they just open up the linked page. The "Blog" link on the menu there should open in a new window as well, but none of them do.
I'm creating a new content page, using the WYSIWYG editor, selecting "External link" as the type of content and inserting the url of the page I want it to go to, where it asks for a url. Then on the Options tab I'm making sure the Target is set to "_blank" which should make it open in a new window, right? There doesn't seem to be much else to do on those options and settings. So I'm assuming I'm missing something.

CMSMS 1.7 is no longer supported.
