Concurrent users/activity- testing

hello- we are involved in a project where our client is asking about stability on the CMS-MS with concurrent activity. Theoretically his could be 3000 site visitors with for example 600 concurrent requests to the system/database etc.
Does anyone have any stats or pointers on this, should we try and split across several servers for example?- and what spec should the servers be?
