for each content box on each content page within the admin, is there a way to take off word wrap this way we can scroll horizontally?  

my other thought, is there a way to expand the width of that box so that its longer?

if you're talking about the WYSIWYG editor box, you can edit the width/height of this box in the TinyMCE preferences.
