Date in search results?

Does the Search module have access to the post date of a news item, or the modification date of a page?
Especially for news items, I think it would be useful to be able to rank search results by date. But "{$entry->postdate}" and similar don't seem to work, and I don't have the skill to investigate further. Thanks in advance for any tips.
