wouldn't it be nice to have syntax highlighting  on the backend and maybe fronted

**edit** found editarea but it would be nice if also all the smarty tags would be highlighted. That would be handy if you want to make completecated templates.

added to CMSms?

Has been mentioned many times, you may like the template externalizer module as it lets you edit templates in the editor of your choice...
