Products module duplicate URL

Hi,
I've been using the Products module for a while now and it's been doing exactly what I need it to. Something I have recently noticed is that when I modify a product name and alias the old URL still works. I don't understand why the old URL does not become invalid?
Can anyone shed any light on why the Products module maintains old URLs? I've tried clearing the cache but to no avail.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise on this. Hope there is a solution as this isn't good for SEO.
