New 404 error handling

I am using CMSMS 1.8.1 and until today Sept. 21, 2010 the 404 page worked fine.
Somewhere along the way from 1.6.7 and now the Site Admin » Global Settings » Custom 404 Handling tab is not used anymore and is replaced by a 404 content page. (this is crazy, now I have to have a 404 page in my content listing, UGLY)
I don't want a 404 error page cluttering up my content listing.
I have searched and found no explaination as to what was wrong and why it changed?

Content -> Pages.
Add New Content
Select "Error Page" at the dropdown for the ContentType.
Type the text that you want.
Submit.

Thanks, for the info. it works now, but...
The one thing I don't like is having to create a page listed under my content pages. Ruining the look of my perfectly laid out page listings of just products.

I agree, the option in the settings was better!

Move it to the very top of your pages in content > pages if you don't like it in your pages somewhere, it actually gives you way more options for an error page, you can use a specific template, add some special wording, put specific News items in it, etc...

I've done that and see that in Content -> Pages the two columns Active and Default are both blank and there is no checkbox after it, so I can't select a template..
When test it I see my new error text displayed in my homepage's template, but when I type in the url of a non-existant page in my browser I just see a server issued blank 404 page, so CMSMS isn't intercepting the server default at all..
Thoughts please?
Thanks

For you neatniks who are complaining, here is how to keep your site structure tidy and hide certain pages from clients. ( Designer and Editor users can't see the 404 Pages in their content list anyway unless you add them to the Owner list on the options tab. )
1. Create a new page, entitled "Special" or whatever you want to call it. Make the content type = "Section Header".
2. In the options tab for this page, uncheck "show in menu".
3. On the options tab under "Additional Editors" hold the CTRL key and click the groups that you want to be able to see/edit this page.
Save it.
Now, for special pages such as 404 Error, just create them as CHILDREN of the "Special" section header. They will not be seen in the menu, and they will not show on the Pages list in the Admin for Editors or Designers unless you put them on the "Additional Editors" list.
