I work on a php server (v4.4.7) with the mle version (1.6.6)
I would like to update my site to 1.8.2 but I see that for classic cms the minimun version is 5.2.12
do I need the same version of php server for the mle ?

Yes, you can use 1.6.8 only
For 1.7+ the minimum version is 5.2.4
