Hello

In 2008 I created a CMSMS site using version 1.2.3. For reasons due to the recession, this site has lain dormant until now.

I have now been asked to resurrect it and my question is this:

What is the best way to upgrade the CMSMS program to the latest version.

I do hope you can help.

Thanks

Martin

There for sure better ways, but as first i would backup the complete site with databse, install it on my local server and start with upgrade.
Maybe a lower versoin number then current.

You will for sure have some template layout problems and most possibly also errors depending what modules are used and so on.
But on local installation you can easily track and solve the problems and when everything works you can upload the working updated database and files.

Sent you PM, and check my signature. At least for a proper backup.

Another question please.

Do I have to upgrade sequentually ie 1.2.3 -> 1.2.4

OR

1.2.xx -> 1.3.xx

OR

1.2.xx -> 1.8.xx straight away.

Thanks

Martin

I wouldn't go directly to 1.8 but would jump over a few versions.

I am now gonig to upgrade from 1.2.3 to a later version 1.7.1 before going on to 1.8.1

In the upgrade instructions with the 1.7.1 'package' it says:

Untar the source package to document root dir or your webserver
      - cd DOCUMENT_ROOT
      - tar xvfz cmsmadesimple-VERSION.tar.gz

I am not too sure what the line 'tar xvfz....' means, especially the letters xvfz.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Martin

Read this instructions http://mkrd.info/software-discussions/c ... imple.html
Or extract the archive on your desktop and upload the files using an FTP programm (like FileZilla - but for some reasons this should be the last option).

That's for folks who install thru SSH (secure shell). I'm happy that NaN linked to my article. I'll go see if instructions you read can be modified.

Actually my site still working like a charm ;) but I'd like to refresh engine a little.
so I'm interested in your "1.2->1.8 story" as well :)

Well, I did it.
It was a local server copy of my website, and now it's coming the very moment of updating online version ;)

On local, there were no problems at all, but I had no special modules.
One thing which is important to note: in never versions there is no "contact_form email=" which was in 1.2, so there will be some little work to do.

BTW one question: my admin area (backend) still looks like in 1.2, where can I change this?

Take a look in the Userprefs.
