Help! Change of server and database

Hi

I just wanted to try the cmsmadesimple and was very pleased how easy it was to get up and running.

However I've installed it on a test server and now I'd like to change the server, the domain and the database in order to get it going the proper place.

I've looked in the docúmentation and the forum with no luck. I'd really appreciate it, if some one could help me with a simple "how to" guide? Or even some hints would do. I figure I must insert the files, make a reinstall and create a new database. The only question is how.... :-\

Thanks a lot...

Once I have a site ready i install the backup module,,

For CMSMS before 1.x dowload here http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/databasebackup/
For 1.* and up download here, http://multiintech.com/cmsms4/index.php ... tensions-2

Then goto Extensions » Database Backup, create back up,  it will create a folder in admin in this will be text file "backup-2006-04-30_01-05-26.txt", that's...
" name-year-month-day_time.txt", default, but you can name it, just have .txt on end...

On the new site...

I install CMSMS and all the modules used in old site, install backup module, run it once so it will create the backup folder...

connect with FTP to the original site, first folder,,  admin, inside is backup folder inside it find your "backup-2006-04-30_01-05-26.txt" file, download with FTP to your computer...
connect with FTP to new site and upload "backup-2006-04-30_01-05-26.txt" to the new site admin/backup folder...

In admin of the new site, go to Extensions » Database Backup, under name for backup window click "Restore a Previous Backup Set"
in the drop down find the "backup-2006-04-30_01-05-26.txt" file...
you will see a warning under it "WARNING!! RESTORING A DATASET WILL OVERWRITE ALL THE CURRENT DATABASE CONTENTS!!"...
click 'Restore This Backup Set' and then go to Site Admin » Global Settings and clear Cache, you could even logout & login again,, you might have to tweak a few things...

Note: make sure you move any images in the uploads/images folder and any thing else that was added thru FTP, I've just moved the uploads folder sometimes to make it easier...

i've moved three ,,,EDIT: now up to 32 times,,, from my site/server to my clients domain and inside my own site...

I left their site running in front till CMSMS site looked the way they wanted, then went live by renaming the 'index.html', browsers look for index.html first, then index.php, that's why they can sit side by side and the .html comes up first,

EDIT: Better idea, after you run the backup on old site, FTP all folders to your comp. add the original install folder, FTP to new site, run install, then go to backup module and restore "backup-2006-04-30_01-05-26.txt" this way you get everything from original site including uploads folder....

Hi Mark,

I have the same kind of problem. I have developed a simple website with the great(est) CMSMS locally using XAMPP and
I want to move it to my Internet Service Provider.

When I do the backup as you describe, I seem to get an older version of my site. That is strange..?!
Can you advice me on what I am doing wrong ?!

CMSMS v.0.13

Thank you very much in advance / BR / Lars

First thing, have you cleared your Cache, it may have the old site info stored and it's serving it to you instead of the new one.

What is the date on the "backup-2006-04-30_01-05-26.txt" file, you can go to the backup folder via FTP and delete all of them and make a new one and try that, also after deleting them and before making a new one go to Site Admin » Global Settings and clear the Cache and view your site once then make a backup and see how that works.

Hi Mark,

I have tried you advice a couple of times in different sequences, clearing the cache,
making sure that I have the right backup taken to restore from. Everything looks normal,
the backupmodule shows the insertion of tables in the database, but the the restoration
does NOT occur, even after clearing the cache again and doing logout/login. Even when I
query the database itself (phpAdmin), it does not show any changes.

I will be most greatfull for any help or ideas, please ?!

Kind regards / Lars

CMSMS v. 0.13
Opera v.9.0
IE v. 6.0
Firefox v.1.0.7
Windows XP platform SP2
XAMPP for Windows Version 1.5.3a (PHP Version 5.1.4, Apache 2.2.2)

P.S. (I will go on and try the same on the v. 1.0 beta3 of CMSMS).D.S. Lars

If this is an installation on your comp. and not a hosting/remote server, I'm not sure how that works, it may have some thing to do with the problem.

I must say .... CMSMS ... WOW !!!
I was using Joomla for a while ... but really tough going when it comes to personalising pages/layout.
CMSMS is what the Internet was invented for.

Anyway.  onward... Please make it so that a site that is developed locally (graphics only) can be easily uploaded. ie. a raw site can be uploaded, graphic ready.
I would say that not everyone who uses cmsms is a computer tech. i.e .graphic designers etc (allergic to Computers:-) )

What i'm tryin to say is .... I use cmsms to develop a website (graphics included) with no content .. upload ... hand the end user the user and pass. and away they go ...

I mean wots this

I develop locally... but I do two things that you shouldn't (sound of hand smacking face)

1. I don't delete the install folder (because its local)
2. I ignore the warnings to delete it (because its local)

Then once I'm happy ...

1. I clear cache AND THEN copy the entire contents of the site folder via ftp
(making sure tmp_cache, config.php etc all have the correct permissions 777)

2. I then then mysqldump the local version of the database to a file

3. I run a search and replace through the dumped sql file for domain names... (if you've added images through the wysiwig editor)
    (ie find htttp://localhost/somefolder for http://www.mysites.com)

4. I then upload the sql file to the new servers database

5. Then I run the install/install.php on the new server, and follow all the instructions EXCEPT I uncheck the options to alter the database (default templates etc)

6. I clear the cache again and all is well

30 sites later it still works

Robsta

THEN I DELETE THE INSTALL FOLDER

Forgot this...

The moment your site is out there you need to delete the install folder because there is nothing stopping me running

htttp://www.yoursite.com/install/install.php

And making it my own.

This may seem like a novice comment... but if you are going to use Backup (the module that Mark linked to and has the zip hosted on his website), you want to make sure that you delete the backup.txt file as soon as you download it. Also delete backup.txt as soon as you are finished restoring the database once you upload the backup.txt file. If you don't who is to say I can't try to access the file through my web browser. Granted I would have to guess the date and time at the end of the file name but if I were diligent enough or wrote a small program, I could get lucky.

Or do I not have something configured correctly, because I can access mine through the web browser.

May be the backup.txt could have some user choosen additional digits in its name to prevent HTTP download. I mean you type in "1234" and clic "Backup now!" and you get a backup-1234.txt file. You are the only one on Earth knowing this 1234 code.

I think that would be a much better alternative.

I am not a programmer by any means, but I don't think it would be too difficult to write a script that would initiate a brute force attack that would try sequential combinations.

You could do the restore then delete the backup.txt file since you will still have it on your comp...

If you made a backup whenever you finished making major changes, or once a month, then ftp it back to your comp. and delete the server side copy you would always have a relatively recent copy to fall back on...
