Files uploaded, then nothing happened.

Hi.  Sigh, Brand new wanna-be user, having trouble already.

I followed the steps for a cPanel install for version 1.7.  Everything uploaded and extracted without any problems.  CHMODed the directories as instructed.  Created the database.  Then I went to Step D, the one that says

"Now you are ready to complete the installation process. Log out of cPanel and go to your website (type your domain name into your web browser). You should see the CMS Install/Upgrade page. "

Did that, nothing happened.  My website came up as usual.  I use Firefox so I opened the site in IE.  Same thing.

I'm running Apache 2.2.14, php 5.2.11, mySQL 5.0.81 so seem to have the system requirements...

Did I load the wrong files?  I downloaded cmsms-1.7-full.tar.gz (and checksum file).

I looked in the troubleshooting section and couldn't even find this type of error...

Any ideas?

Be much more clearer. What do you mean "as usual"??

If this is a fresh install, but an index.html exists with a "hello world, this site is working" kind of content, then that file would have to be disabled first. Is this a first install of CMSMS on blank hosting??

oh, maybe you hit the nail on the head.  I have a pre-existing website and I just want to add CMSMS so that I can allow some new people to edit content.  It already has an index.html, a bunch of sub pages, CSS files, etc.

Heck, since this will probably come up very soon as a problem:  Here's how my site is laid out.  The main domain is www.turondo.com, and I loaded CMSMS in the public directory of that domain.  BUT the site that needs CMSMS is willametteartcenter.com, which is stored in a subdirectory of turondo.com.  I don't really know the language to describe this exactly--when I bought the hosting plan, they said I could have up to 6 websites with their own unique identifiers (i.e. it's not turondo.com/willametteartcenter, it's willametteartcenter.com--even though on the SERVER, the code for wac.com is stored in a folder of turondo.com).  Does that make sense?

Wac.com is the website for a nonprofit art center and I'm the amateur webmaster.  I've had some people volunteer to update the content on the site, but they're wimps and want to use a Wordpress-like system instead of editing code.  ::)

So ultimately I want to integrate CMSMS capability into an EXISTING, rather large, website.  Which happens to be stored in a subfolder under the public_html directory.

I installed CMSMS into the public_html directory, figuring I could just tell it the proper path to wac.com later.  But maybe I should have put it straight into wac.com's folder?

Thoughts?

For organization, it will be much simpler to have CMSMS installed in a subfolder on your site. As it sounds you do not want to convert the whole static site to CMSMS yet, you can instead point certain page links to /cmsms/path.html. However, this would probably require that CMSMS template look like the site you already have.

"I want to integrate CMSMS capability into an EXISTING, rather large, website". Which website are you talking about? WAC? or something bigger? PM me the link and I will take a look at that "large" website.

If we are talking about a nonprofic WAC site then converting it to a CMSMS template is doable on this forum.

OK.  So that means I should uninstall CMSMS and start over by installing it in a new folder, right?

WAC is the site that I want to integrate CMSMS into.  It's the one I host for the nonprofit art center.  The link is www.willametteartcenter.com  (everyone please feel free to come look at it, especially if you're anywhere near Salem, Oregon!  ;D  We have glassblowing classes... UBERcool).

I suppose some would not consider that a particularly large website, but speaking as the one who coded it all by hand, it seems awful darn big to me.  And that's the problem--I have too many projects going on to keep it up to date, which is why I want to integrate CMSMS onto certain pages, so these other volunteers can add content.  And it would be nice to let site visitors add comments, hopefully to tell the world how much fun they had taking an art class from us... That sort of thing.

This http://mkrd.info/about-the-willamette-art-center.html literally took me 2 MINUTES to convert to a CMSMS template. Once you spend the short time converting your site to a CMSMS template, you will forget about all that work with static HTML.

http://wiki.cmsmadesimple.org/index.php/How_to#How_to_motorize_your_old_plain_html_static_site_with_CMS_Made_Simple

This is a new page created from that template: http://mkrd.info/and-this-is-a-new-page-with-that-template.html

The rough draft template is attached below

DOOD!

That looks like EXACTLY what I want.  Thank you!!!  :) :) :) :) :)

(of course, if I go read it and can't make it work, I'll be back...)

Got it installed, but now I"m stumbling!

I reloaded CMSMS in its own directory and now it works happily at www.turondo.com/cmsms .  Yay.  My pre-existing "static" sites look fine and I can see the default CMSms pages AND log in to the CMSms control panel.

However,

I'm not sure what to do next.  For one thing, I tried following the steps in the "How To Motorize" wiki that you so kindly linked above.  I got to Step 2.  Which says,

    Step 2

    Move your content:
Now it is time to start "replicating" one simple static page and then to treat all of them.

    For example domain.net/aboutus.html :

        * Log in the admin.
        * In the content, create a new page.
        * Important : give it the "aboutus" alias.
        * Set its title from the old static page's title.
        * Copy the content of you old static page and paste it in the new page.
        * Assign a template to the new page.
        * (Backup and) delete the old aboutus.html file on the webserver.
        * Browse to domain.net/aboutus.html to see the new dynamic content responding.

First of all, when I log in, I seem to have the wrong status.  I don't have the option to make a new page--just add content to the existing pages.  Hunh?  I thought I did everything right in setting up this user, so I'm kind of at a loss as to why I'm stuck in editor-level mode, not admin-level mode.

Next of all... well, my existing "static" site isn't IN the /cmsms directory... so exactly how do I tell cmsms to go into the folder turondo.com/willametteartcenter/news and work its magic on the file, oh, say... glass.html?  In other words, how do I set the path to the existing site files, so they can become my new templates?

Let's take a completely different approach.

1) Go to templates, create new, paste in text from attached file.

2) Go to stylesheets, paste everything from your old stylesheet.

3) Go to templates, link the new template with the new css file (that small css button on the right of the template's name).

4) Set that template as default. Then click "apply to all pages". See what happens.

5) copy images from old site to /uploads/images. Edit paths in the new css file to reflect the /uploads/images path.

6) Then go page by page - Create new page, match the title, click "html" icon in the wysiwyg editor. Go into the "text" section of the static site's html code. Copy that and paste into the new page. Repeat for all pages until you replicate your whole site.
