Is there a Hello World so I can learn to create a module?
Is there a Hello World for hitting a database (not the CMSMS one)?

You can download the "Skeleton" module which is basically a "Hello World".

IIRC http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/ctlmodulemaker also has a hello world.. it is also a mod maker... it's featured in the new CMSMS book to so you can follow along.
