I've noticed when searching the forum that Google is often indexing the Print page instead of the actual post.

I think you can solve this by putting a in the print pages that points back to the correct post URL.

The search button in the menu is still the old search, I just use the Firefox search addon, works great, especially for things with $ etc...

Sure, but that misses the point.  Correctly configuring the forum template will keep Google from indexing the print pages instead of the forum pages.
