creating thumbnails for manually uploaded images

I've been trying to upload images manually (It's much quicker than doing it one file at a time).
The only problem is that in the image manager, it says "no thumbnail available". Seems that it creates the thumbnail upon the first upload of the image, and since it was uploaded outside the CMS, it never got created.
I can live with this, because as soon as I manipulate the image, a thumbnail gets saved, but it would be nice if the system could notice that a thumb is not present, and create it if needed.
