Separate Top/Side Navigation

Hi All,
Curious if anyone tried (and succeeded
) in separating Top and Side navigation/menu(s).
The idea is to have Top always on top with expending child/dropdown menus where ever necessary, and a "context sensitive" side navigation/menu that will reflect/mirror children of the selected top navigation. I suspect that there might be even such a theme/template available.
