News summary with links to page numbers rather than prev/next page

Hi
I've been trying to work out (but failing) how to get the page numbers showing in a news summary like:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Next
Rather than >>
Has anybody got any guidance on this please.
I can only see reference to $nexturl $lasturl $prevurl $firsturl
I'm running CMSMS 1.6.6
