there must be a function or UDT that can be set up to do this.

You can post a Feature Request for the module at dev.cmsmadesimple.org

But currently there is nothing to my knowledge that exists.

is there a way of making the search form within the UDT i've made above, so it doesn't have to fetch smartys?
also, is there a chance you know the answer to another topic i've created?
