Can there be an easier way to upgrade CMSMS wihtout having to backup/upload/upgrade?
Is it possible to have an upgrade section of the admin area so I can, in theory, just press "upgrade and install" just how the Module Manager works?

if you do a forum search, you'll see that this idea has been discussed before. I do not believe a "one-click" update is being considered by the dev team.

From what I hear it is a situation where one click upgrade could lead to vulnerabilities, just ask the nice folks at jo***la how big there security board is...

How about rotten vegetable throwing if the single-click process fails and partially overwrites files?

Slightly off topic, but I always upgrade on the side first.. I don't trust live upgrades and there is some downtime involved.. I copy all the files into a subdir, create a new table, copy the old table into the new one, make the necessary changes to config.php.. Once the upgrade is complete and verified on the side, I change the file paths and URL in config.php to point back to the root, back up the old, and roll in the new (retire the old table, and use the new table)
With that said, I've never had a single issue upgrading.
