Babel: Multilingual site - Problem with $page_lang

Hi,
According to the can I for example do:
{if $page_lang == "en_us"}ENGLISH FOOTER{elseif $page_lang == "da_dk"}DANSK SIDEFOD{/if}
In a footer, but it are working but when I navigate around the site suddenly the Footer are disaperring.
What can be wrong ?
