image uploader ceased to work

I am running windows xp, office 2007 and cms 1.5.4. The image manager has worked for several weeks but has now stopped Once the required image file has been selected and "send " pressed I just get the "waiting for ****" at the screen bottom and the system then hangs until the timeout occurs. I can upload images from my laptop ok so the web side seems to be ok. Any ideas please.
