For some reason when I have {menu start_level ="2" number_of_levels="1" }  the menu for the left hand navigation disappears.

but this works. {menu start_level ="1" number_of_levels="1" }

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, this worked fine in 1.6.4
When I upgraded to 1.6.5 it stopped working.
Busy trying to solve this one as well.
