ErrorEmailer - depreciated?

I'm looking to have any PHP or other site errors emailed to me as soon as they pop up, so I grabbed the ErrorEmailer module from the Forge. I uploaded and installed it, set up my settings etc as instructed, and gave it a test.
Unfortunately when the module is enabled no site is displayed. Manually entering URLs (/news/ etc, pretty URLs is enabled but doesn't seem to make a difference) gives the same result: a blank page.
We're using CMSMS 1.6.3. From the looks of the project summary the module was last changed in 2007. Drop a post here if anybody has any thoughts on what might be causing this - this is after all a potentially useful addition!
Thanks in advance,
Edit for a little more tech info:
Apache/2.2.9 (Unix) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.8h PHP/5.2.6 mod_apreq2-20051231/2.6.0 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.0
