Difference between Frontend Users and iUsers?

Hi,

I‘d be glad if someone could give me some hints. I am a bit confused: Obviously there are two mechanisms in CMSMS for working with users in the frontend? The one module seems to be "Frontend Users". The second module seems to be "iUsers".
But iUsers can't be found in the forge. Whereas there are some others modules related to iUsers that are in the forge (IUsers Subscription Manager, IUsers to Simple Machines Forum). But iUsers  appears in the module manager and is mentionend several times in the forum. Whereas Frontend Users shows in both places.
So I installed FEU and got it to work. But maybe it is a bit to much for me or some of my customers?
Could somebody help me with mentioning some differences or strenghts of the two modules? E.g. is iUsers simple to set up? And has limited capabilities? Or is FEU overwhelming and just too much for many uses? Or some other hints …

Thanks for helping

Reinhard

Yo,

I was thinking this same thing this morning. From what I can gather iUsers is a Custom Content-like module for FrontEndUsers:

Hi there, I'm sorry for not having seen this post earlier, I am the author of IUsers and I'll answer your question now to explain how IUsers came about :)

I am a website programmer specialized in the language of PHP. When I was employed by a private website development company in Auckland New Zealand, the designers there preferred to use CMSms. So being the only programmer at the company I was required to get familiar with it.

I found as quick as anyone else does, that the core cms does not manage front-end users, and the established method of managing front-end users was by using the FEU module developed by the highly esteemed CalGuy (a maintainer and developer of CMSms core). Upon installation I found the module to be one aspiring to utmost flexibility in terms of catering to any possible configuration you will imagine, but consequently, not ready to work without initial configuration. Furthermore, there was somewhat of a learning curve involved, which by experience inevitably requires patience, and the thing a customer will always revolt against - having to learn something new.

So I ascertained that a simplified user module was in demand and since I love the CMSms module interface, it was my pleasure to type code which would provide user management module which works 'out of the box', and in an a fashion that was intuitive enough you don't have to go searching for tutorials in order to use it. The project took about a week and shortly afterwards it went to production on three websites, which are still live today (however due to privacy cannot be advertised here). Due to the varied project requirements, there were other modules requested such as ELetters and ISubscribe, which I developed in my spare time in order to be able to contribute to the OSS community.

Since that time, I have been employed by another company with a proprietary architecture, and I have not had sufficient motive to apply resources to the projects. However, being a natural supporter and believer in the benefits of open-source software for community, I'm willing to supply services at discounted rates on certain projects which will contribute development back to the community - get in touch by PM if you have a request for further development on any of my modules.

Cheers, Anthony.

FEU is for the front end of the site not the backend, IUsers is something altogether different and iirc it is outdated and no longer supported and not recommended to be used...

Hi Dr CSS,

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, seems there have been some quite major changes to event dispatching which has broken error/success reporting in all my modules with the latest versions of CMSms. Since the API is excessively unstable, I confirm that I am no longer supporting these modules as the level of support required is too great and my time spent doing this is not justified.

Many regards, Anthony.
