pages become inactive after every edit

I have an installation of CMSMS 1.2. It has worked well for many months.
Today, this curious behavior began:
When I edit a page, the page becomes inactive. This happens whether I press "Submit" or "Apply".
If I then click the "Inactive" "X" in the Pages list, the X turns back into a check mark and the page displays normally, with the changes I submitted in place.
Any idea what went wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks!

look in apache error logs and test your database for errors etc etc etc

Hello,
is your old 1.2 installation maintained/monitored ? Could it have been cracked ?
What about a big big backup and an upgrade to 1.6.x ?

thanks, Pierre! I so appreciate your response.
Can you suggest where to look to see if the installation was cracked?
I have many CMSMS sites on my server; I'm trying to determine how best to upgrade, especially since the custom templates will, in many cases, require a nearly complete re-building to meet the changes in template behavior introduced by certain earlier versions of CMSMS.
Does the problem I describe appear to be a likely result of security holes in 1.2?

You might want to get a hold of your hosting people if it worked one day and didn't the next they may have done some kind of upgrade that changed how it behaves, if it was cracked/hacked it most times shows up on the front end like look in the source of the page and see if it has any hidden divs you didn't put in it...
As far as templateing changes I don't think there has been any that would ruin your site, except at one point news went from folder based templates to admin based templates, you just copy the ones in the folder to the news admin side, I've upgraded a site from 0.8 to 1.4 in one jump and it worked fine...
