Integrating file- and imagemanager?

Hello all
I started a bit of work on a new filemanager-module as the present one seems rather basic (as agreed by wishy), and I think I can have a version up and running pretty soon which does at least what that one does. I have looked quite a bit around for an alternative to replace it, but ended up thinking that either they had not been maintained for several years or the integration process into cmsms would be rather painful. So I decided to have a go at it...
And therefore I wondered if you think I should try to integrate the FileManager and ImageManager or you would rather they were developed seperately? I'm considering something like a 2-tab setup with filemanagent-view on one and image-view on another...
Pros for integration:
- Some filemanagement function would be nice to have in the imagemanager as well (and integration will speed up development)
- you can seemlessly change from fileview to image-view and visa versa
Cons:
- Doing a two-tab setup slows things down a bit as thumbnails should be checked every time you change dir eventhough you're in file-view
- The development effort may be more distributable if they were not integrated
Let me know what you think. So far I'll just concentrate on the file-part...
