Module manager permissions error

I am trying to install a new module (captcha) and get the following error on teh Module Manager screen:

WARNING: Insufficient directory permissions to install modules. You may also be experiencing problems with PHP Safe mode. Please ensure that safe mode is disabled, and that file system permissions are sufficient.

I have opened max permissions for the directory "module manager" and "uploads" folders and still am not having any luck. I have also made sure that PHP safe mode is turned off. any other ideas?

The alternative would be to use a third party captcha script. Any suggestions for this?

Thanks

bingo. i was able to remove the error message by opening up permissions for the httpdocs directory. next question then, now it says that captcha is incompatible, what is it incompatible with? the server? the version of cms? how do i find this out?
