Template Externalizer - MLE / Not working

hey,
i've used the template externalizer a lot in my last projects and i rellay love this smart add-on
at this time i've an mle-installation and template externalizer installed. when i switched on the development mode, all the files have been created (out of my DB). BUT: when i modify my files via FTP the updates are not recognized. which means: there is no update in the database... unfortunately i've no idea why.
how does template externalizer capture/check the updates? is there any cron-job? do i need any special permissions (except the folder persmissions) to get template externalizer working? is it working with MLE?
i hope somebody could give me a hint to get template externalizer running
