[SOLVED] Multiple Fatal Errors

I was working on uploading images via FTP and adding them to an already existing site this morning, and something got corrupt, and now I am getting loads of fatal errors when I try to login or view the site. We were about to make this "live" this afternoon, so the timing is NOT good. Can anyone tell me what's going on?
I recently upgraded the site from version 1.5.3 to 1.5.4, and this is the first time I've done heavy duty editing since that update about a week ago. All was working fine for about an hour, then I started to get repeat requests for login again while editing, then page copy began to disappear while I started to get FTP uploading errors that permissions were bad.
I've been reading the forums and help pages and nothing seems to be helping. I reuploaded all the "cmsmadesimple-base-diff-1.5.3-1.5.4", but it only made new errors appear.
The ones appearing now include:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function check_login() in /hermes/web02/b743/as.poscom/public_html/cms/admin/index.php on line 36
Fatal error: Call to undefined function cms_calculate_url() in /hermes/web02/b743/as.poscom/public_html/cms/index.php on line 116
But these are not the only ones that I've been getting.
Should I try to go to a backup database at this point? What else can be done? Please help!
