CMS Upgrades

I've been told that the version that I am running is like 2 1/2 years old, and I'm told I need to upgrade it. [glow=red,2,300]So how do I do that?[/glow] I'm not familiar with really any of this so if someone is willing to give step-by-step instructions that would be so helpful. ???
