News Module - Detail Page Question

Hi All - I am a newcomer to CMSms, and am loving it so far! 
I have a question about the News module though, and specifically fitting the detail page into the heirarchy of the rest of the site...
I have a summary of the 3 most recent news entries on the homepage of the site I am working on just now, and they display fine thanks to a custom template and some CSS - very happy. I have created a page with the alias 'news' and applied one of my page templates to it, I am directing the detail page to the 'news' page. (tell me if that's wrong)
I was hoping to use a menu link to point to the 'news' page where it would list all articles and categories in a blog style, and more importantly work with the breadcrumbs module to form a structure. At the moment when you click on an item it goes to the page, the menus react as active and the item is displayed, but there is no way to navigate to a category page or the main 'news' page (as the menu item is active and hence not an anchor).
How have other configured there news structure to make URLs and breadcrumbs etc work - any online examples would be great!
I have briefly tried the Blogs module, but I was not overly happy with the results.
