Collapse error in Admin - User's can't see page list until manually deleted

Hi all,
We are working with a client to find a solution for a new issue that has been coming around for a while now. It seems as if when an admin user deletes pages, the system's collapse feature for the page lists (within the admin) is erroring out. What happens is all of the sudden - any given user can't see any of the pages and therefore can not make any edits. The only odd thing about this site is it has been upgraded several times over a 30 month month period.
Is this something that has been fixed or anyone else has even heard about? My lead developer is going to look into it but I was hoping to see if anyone else has encountered this issue and if so - what did you do. As a quick fix - we have been removing the entry in any users collapse field and it works. But we keep seeing people have the issue happen again.
Additionally, we have to fix this whether a fix exists or not. If I can't find any answers here on the forum - I will create a write up once we figure out what has happened.
This system is using version 1.4.1
